The documentary branch are notorious at this point for picking some strange nominees but this year actually has quite a high calibre of documentaries to choose from in a rather competitive category.
Time is a powerful film about one extraordinary woman who raises her six boys while fighting to get her husband out of prison. The film shines a light on the unequal prison system in American and is incredibly effective.
Despite Time's rawness, Crip Camp manages to illicit those same emotions while also being an incredibly uplifting experience about a handicapped community that would go to summer camp together and eventually fight for equal rights. The movie is inspiring and produced by the Obamas which will give it some bonus points with voters.
The likely winner here is My Octopus Teacher which has continued to pick up momentum since its release. Inventive and unique in its filmmaking, the story of a man befriending an inquisitive and curious octopus in the wild is rather remarkable even if the subject matter is far lighter than its co-nominees.
