Oscars 2021: Predicting Winners In EVERY Category
1. Best Picture: Minari
More than ever the Best Picture award has taken on a symbolic meaning in Hollywood. It is definitely no coincidence that months after Trump assumed office Moonlight was named Best Picture (alongside genuinely being the most powerful film that year), a film which represented everything that the disgraced former President opposed.
An ideal Best Picture winner is as inoffensive as possible, a cultural summation of where the world - but particularly America - is at the moment and (seemingly as an afterthought) a good film. For this reason Minari is a strong contender for Best Picture in 2020, a film which depicts the very American experience of immigration, boasts a diverse cast and is genuinely lauded as one of the best films of the year.
One film that may stand in the way is Nomadland starring Frances McDormand and directed by Chloé Zhao which examines class in the same timely fashion that Minari looks at race and immigration. As well as addressing class and exploitation of worker's rights the film is a timely look at America and a break from the male-centric other films it will most likely contend with. However, Minari looks set to win Best Picture which would mark the second consecutive year a film focusing on a South Korean family wins the coveted award with Parasite having done so the previous year.
