Oscars 2021: Predicting Winners In EVERY Category

8. Best Adapted Screenplay: The Father

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Chadwick Boseman
Sony Pictures Classics

Best Adapted Screenplay is typically made up of films based on books - previous winners including Jojo Rabbit, BlacKkKlansman and Call Me By Your Name - but 2020 could be the year of the adapted play with potentially three strong nominees.

One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and The Father are three of the most talked about films on the awards circuit at the moment which all happen to be adapted from critically acclaimed plays. In regards to taking home the Oscar, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom may suffer as its adaptation from stage to screen amounted to just cutting an hour's worth of dialogue and adding an extra scene whereas One Night in Miami adaptation is perhaps too faithful to the play with the film often feeling quite staged throughout.

However, The Father utilises the upgrade from play to film as it tells the story of a dementia-stricken father from his point of view with the use of filmic language like time lapses, changing characters and flashbacks. Adapted from Florian Zeller's play Le Pere this Anthony Hopkins drama is currently enjoying 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and with its inventive adaptation it looks likely to sweep all the major writing awards.
