7. Best Original Screenplay: The Trial Of The Chicago Seven

Best Original Screenplay is in many ways the broadest award up for grabs at the Oscars with previous winners spanning a wide range of genres such as sci-fi (Her), horror (Get Out) and comedy (Juno).

The pool of potential nominees for Original Screenplay this year covers this broad spectrum from #MeToo comedy thriller Promising Young Woman to Minari's story of the immigration experience from a Korean family's point of view. The thing these stories share is a sense of urgency and relevance in a post-Trump America where the rights of women and minorities have been threatened for the past four years and - with the political divide greater than ever - are still hotly debated issues today.

However, perhaps the most timely story that will most likely nab the Original Screenplay is The Trial of the Chicago Seven which examines racial discrimination, police brutality and the government's complicity with all of this in the late 1960s anti-Vietnam riots. While writer Aaron Sorkin is far from subtle with the parallels to Trump's America, his latest film manages to - for the most part - successfully blend comedy, drama and his signature rapid fire dialogue in a politically relevant film which will go down well with Academy voters.
