Oscars 2021: Ranking The Nominated Performances From Worst To Best
1. Anthony Hopkins - The Father
One of the greatest actors of all time, Sir Anthony Hopkins bares all in The Father, a drama about a man struggling with dementia told through his eyes. Along with Pieces of a Woman, this is the hardest film of the year to watch, with a leading performance straight out of Shakespearean tragedy that shall be burned into your mind and never leave.
The one thing holding Boseman back from this top spot is the stagey nature of Ma Rainey's performance and script. Boseman doesn't speak like a normal human being would and the refined dialogue can take you out of the film at times. Hopkins feels honest and naturalistic as he struggles to cope with his increasingly unexplainable reality.
The legend has no shortage of iconic roles but he has never been better here. The titanic performance covers several emotional beats and stages and Hopkins nails every single one. It is a brutally sincere performance that will leave you broken and hollow and in any other year, Hopkins would run away with the Best Actor Oscar.
At 83, Hopkins shows that he can still give a perfect performance, and his work in The Father is unquestionably the best performance of the year.
