Oscars 2021 Review: 8 Ups & 8 Downs
5. Daniel Kaluuya Gives The Speech Of The Night
Though the more stripped-down nature of the night meant that there were disappointingly few awards winners who took to the stage to give boozy acceptance speeches, Daniel Kaluuya still became the night's MVP with his meme-worthy speech.
Accepting the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his sublime performance as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, Kaluuya was as coolly charming as ever, until it came time to pay tribute to his mother, Damalie Namusoke, who was in attendance at the show.
Kaluuya hilariously said, "My mum met my dad, they had sex, it's amazing!," which in of itself is one of the strangest things ever said on any Oscar podium ever.
To hammer the hilarity home, though, the producers immediately cut to the bemused facial expression of his dear mum. Brilliant.
