Oscars 2021 Review: 8 Ups & 8 Downs
4. ChloƩ Zhao's Historic Best Director Win
One of the night's most predictable but also most satisfying wins saw Nomadland writer-director-producer-editor ChloƩ Zhao take home a well-deserved Best Director Oscar.
This was especially significant because it not only made Zhao just the second woman in Oscar history to win Best Director - behind Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010 - but the first non-white woman ever to win Best Director.
In a year which saw the Academy pick their most diverse slate of nominees ever - including two female Best Director nominees - it's massively satisfying that one of the most prestigious awards went to an under-represented demographic, and an artist who was also thoroughly deserving of the win.
