Oscars 2022: Every Acting Nominee Ranked

4. Kodi Smit-McPhee - The Power Of The Dog

King Richard Will Smith
Netflix

Portraying the son of Kirsten Dunst's Rose, Kodi Smit-McPhee is in many ways the key figure of The Power of the Dog.

As Peter, Smit-McPhee is gentle and sombre, a softly spoken teenager who loves his mother and seems far too pure for the cruel, lawless world that surrounds him, a fact which becomes abundantly clear when he becomes inexplicably drawn to his vicious new uncle.

Between his endearing lisp and his presence as an unassuming, good-natured young man without an evil bone in his body, Smit-McPhee is heartbreakingly innocent, but hides a subtle darkness.

The Best Supporting Actor race is a tight one this year, but of all the nominees, he's the one who should be holding the trophy by the end of the night.
