Oscars 2022: Every Acting Nominee Ranked
16. Jessica Chastain - The Eyes Of Tammy Faye
There was a time when Jessica Chastain was a clear frontrunner to Oscar glory, but as the ceremony has drawn closer the hype has bled away.
Another choppy Hollywood biopic, The Eyes of Tammy Faye follows the eponymous evangelist as she grapples with personal and professional hardships. And to her credit, Chastain is a ton of fun in the role, as hilariously funny as she is tough to pin down and occasionally moving.
Easily the best part of the movie, Chastain is charismatic and clearly having a ball, but due to the film's muddled screenplay and uncertain message, she also never feels entirely connected to the material, because it simply can't reach her level.
This is a tragic example of a near-great performance trapped inside an indifferent movie that doesn't deserve it. Chastain is on fire, but she deserved better.
