Oscars 2022: Every Best Picture Nominee Ranked

3. Belfast

Dune movie

Kenneth Branagh is yet another in a long line of veteran filmmakers nominated for Best Picture this year, this time for his semi-autobiographical drama Belfast. Taking inspiration from his own childhood, the film tells the story of a young boy growing up in Ireland during The Troubles.

Filmed in stirring black-and-white and portraying the life of its central family with rich melancholy and memorable humour, Belfast is a complex, hopeful ode to growing up surrounded by political strife and a struggling family dynamic.

With a sharp-eyed focus on community spirit, Branagh's most personal movie becomes almost wistful as its story twists the lives of its characters, throwing them into and around a time few can comprehend if they weren't there.

The perfect example of a movie that creates its own world, Belfast is sad and romantic in equal measure, and its cast - particularly a nominated CiarĂ¡n Hinds - help sell it for all its tragedy and ambition.
