Oscars 2023: 10 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Elvis Goes Home Empty-Handed

With eight nominations to its name, Baz Luhrmann's Elvis was one of the most-nominated movies at this year's Oscars, and was widely expected to walk away with awards for Best Actor (Austin Butler), Makeup and Hairstyling, and Costume Design.

Yet in a genuine, pleasant surprise, Luhrmann's wildly over-praised musical biopic left Oscar night empty-handed, with The Whale stealing both Best Actor and Makeup and Hairstyling away, while Costume Design unexpectedly went to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

While Butler and the makeup/hair/costuming aspects of Elvis are by far its strongest suits (pun intended), it's ultimately still an aggressively mediocre piece of work, and to see it passed over for more inspired picks at every turn was very much welcome indeed.

Don't worry, Austin, your time will probably come soon enough.
