Oscars 2023: 10 Ups & 5 Downs
3. Sarah Polley Wins An Oscar
In the earlier stages of Oscar season, it truly seemed like Sarah Polley's Women Talking had a strong shot at winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and perhaps even an acting Oscar or two.
But its momentum violently fell off a cliff by the end of 2022, bombing at the box office and ultimately being lucky to secure two nods - for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.
And while it faced stiff competition from All Quiet on the Western Front, Women Talking indeed took home Best Adapted Screenplay for Polley, a tremendously talented actor-turned-filmmaker who has been quietly building an impressive body of work over more than 15 years.
Plus, Polley revealed on the Oscar red carpet that she's currently working on a movie about awards season itself, which could see her back at the podium before we know it.
