Oscars 2023: 10 Ups & 5 Downs

9. Jimmy Kimmel's Solid Hosting Job

It was tough to be hugely excited about Jimmy Kimmel's third time hosting the Oscars, but considering the insanity of last year's show he proved just the right safe, calming presence to ensure this year's ceremony went off without a hitch.

While his opening monologue and battery of one-liners throughout the show didn't rock the boat too much, he did rattle off a few quality zingers, riffing on Nicole Kidman's infamous AMC ads, Babylon bombing at the box office, Batgirl getting canned, the lack of female Best Director nominees, and Tom Cruise being a scientologist.

Kimmel may not have been a massively inspired pick on paper, and he won't go down as one of the all-time great Oscar hosts, but he kept things light and smooth for the majority, proving to be a non-intrusive presence once his opening gambit was out of the way.

It'd be nice to see a more left-field hosting pick next year, but as reliable options go Kimmel mostly delivered the goods.
