Oscars 2024 Review: 10 Ups & 6 Downs

1. Wes Anderson FINALLY Wins An Oscar (But Doesn't Show Up)

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

If you assumed that Wes Anderson must've won an Oscar by now - especially for his writing - that actually wasn't the case, with this ceremony marking the filmmaker's eighth nomination without a win.

However, Anderson finally took home his first Oscar this year in the Best Live Action Short Film category for his Roald Dahl adaptation The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

While there's much justifiable debate to be had about established filmmakers being in the short film category at all - the spirit of which is intended to foreground lesser-known, on-the-rise talents - given that Anderson has been grossly overdue an Oscar for at least a decade at this point, it's easy to forgive it in this case.

But Anderson sadly didn't get his moment on the Oscar podium, reportedly because he's about to begin production on his next film and couldn't make it to the show.
