Chance: A Long Shot Perhaps, But It's About Hollywood... We all know Hollywood LOVES a good movie about its favourite subject in the world: Hollywood. The last two Best Picture winners, The Artist and Argo, were films about the magic of movies. Saving Mr. Banks is a nice amalgamation of the two past victors, as it takes a look at not only classic filmmaking, but also more personal historical events related to P.L. Travers. However, it's going to have to make up for a lot of lost ground, as it's only been nominated for one Golden Globe. Emma Thompson's successful nomination aside, this is a movie about Walt Disney and his studios, which is basically nostalgic cat nip for older voters who used to tune into Disney's TV show every weekend. The Hollywood Foreign Press would be forgiven for not recognising this factor in their nomination, as Disney didn't really become the international powerhouse it is now until later on in the company's history. So while The Globes might not treat this picture well, it wouldn't be a total surprise if The Oscars were a little more rosy for the film's top prize chances. (Though Tom Hanks will probably be forgoing a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in this film, in exchange for a Best Actor nod in Captain Phillips).
