Oscars: 6 Movies That Were Harmed By Winning Best Picture
4. The King's Speech (2010)
The King's Speech has gone down in history as another forgotten Best Picture winner, and suffers precisely because it was deemed the "safe" choice. At the 83rd Academy Awards it took home four gold statuettes, for Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Original Screenplay. It is also regarded as a film that snatched the award from more worthy contenders, most notably The Social Network, which was the fan-favourite and frontrunner until The King's Speech came in. The Social Network had already swept other awards shows and was, quite honestly, a better movie. It was surprising, gripping, innovative, and unique, and it was also the riskier, more bold choice for Best Picture, but ended up being a bit too edgy for the Academy's more conservative sentiments. Not a fan of the Social Network? How about some of the other great films that were nominated: Black Swan, 127 Hours, and Inception, to name a few. All fantastic movies, all deserving the trophy, only to be beaten out by another catnip film for voters. The King's Speech was a period piece, a historical drama, and about a King overcoming great personal obstacles in order to lead a nation and declare war on Germany in 1939. The movie's good, and Colin Firth was definitely deserving of the award for Best Actor, but, when it comes down to it, the movie is a bit predictable and doesn't offer much as far as setting it apart from other period pieces, making it a good, but forgettable movie.
