Oscars: 6 Movies That Were Harmed By Winning Best Picture

3. Chicago (2002)

How in the world did Chicago win Best Picture? Musicals often get snubbed come awards season, and though Chicago is certainly enjoyable, it's not more deserving of the award than, say, The Pianist. Or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gangs of New York, and The Hours; all better films that in any other year would have been considered Oscar favorites. Chicago's success is more puzzling than anything. It didn't just win Best Picture, but took home 6 awards, the most of the evening: Best Picture, Supporting Actress, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, and Sound Mixing. Sure it makes sense that the whimsy, fun musical would take home some awards in the technical categories, but Best Picture?! You have to remember that "Best Picture" doesn't just imply the best of the five (and now up to ten) nominees. It implies that the film is the best picture of the year. I don't care how catchy the Cell Block Tango is, Chicago is anything but the best movie of 2002,and the ridiculous decision to have it win cheapens its actual quality.
