Oscars: Every Best Picture Winner Ever Ranked From Worst To Best
53. Rain Man (1988)
So much has been written about Dustin Hoffman's unforgettable, Oscar-winning performance in this film that it doesn't really bear repeating: he is brilliant, but frequently overshadows an under-appreciated Tom Cruise, whose performance as his exploitative tool of a brother is really almost as good.
Rain Man won Best Picture in one of the Academy Awards' softest years on record, with its only real competition being a mid-tier Scorsese movie (Dangerous Liaisons), so it's not surprising that this solidly heart-warming - if occasionally wince-inducing - drama prevailed.
Thanks to Tropic Thunder, the phrase "never go full retard" might echo around in your brain every time you think of this movie nowadays, but it's aged far better than many Best Picture winners that followed it. The emotion and character logic still hold firm, in the very least.
