Oscars: Every Best Picture Winner Ever Ranked From Worst To Best

52. From Here To Eternity (1953)

From Here To Eternity Burt Lancaster

There's no denying that the indelible, breathtaking image of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr's beachside smooch has overshadowed the actual cinematic content of Fred Zinnemann's sumptuous war-set romance.

How much you'll enjoy the movie will ultimately depend on your own tolerance for melodrama, for though the ensemble is fantastic - including not only Lancaster and Kerr but also Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed and Ernest Borgnine - you'd be forgiven for thinking it a little dull.

It also fought for Best Picture alongside Roman Holiday and Shane, which don't bring quite the same weighty genre baggage with them.
