Oscars: Every Best Picture Winner Ever Ranked From Worst To Best
27. Forrest Gump (1994)
There's an entire generation of people who grew up loving Robert Zemeckis' quaint, sentimental drama and are totally unaware of how ambivalent critics were about it at the time, and generally continue to be.
For its fans, Forrest Gump is a heart-warming picaresque tale of a man leaving his mark on history despite obvious setbacks, while to others, it's a disquieting expression of the maxim that "ignorance is bliss".
Whatever your own opinion, Tom Hanks' Oscar-winning performance is an absolute home-run, and the visual effects remain mind-bogglingly impressive - especially Lt. Dan's (Gary Sinise) amputated legs - even if there are some troubling aspects to the script.
1994 was clearly one hell of a year, though, and it's easy to see why many feel like Pulp Fiction or The Shawshank Redemption should've won instead. Still, Gump has endured as a cultural touchstone for good reason.
