Oscars Nominations 2022: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

7. Snubs: Caitríona Balfe & Ruth Negga (Best Supporting Actress)

Best Supporting Actress sure was an unpredictable mess of a category this year, for better and for worse.

In terms of worse, two of the year's most buzzed-about performances were somehow ignored by the Academy - Caitríona Balfe (Belfast) and Ruth Negga (Passing).

Particularly shocking is Balfe, who spent many months as the frontrunner to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, only to progressively slide out of contention until she bizarrely didn't even make the final five.

It's even stranger as Balfe's less-praised co-star Judi Dench did receive a nomination, seemingly more through star power than anything.

Negga on the other hand was more of a fringe candidate but still had a lot of passionate cheerleaders, yet the late surge of support for Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) apparently pushed her out.
