Oscars Nominations 2022: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

6. The French Dispatch & Passing Get Totally Shut Out

It's always a shame to see great movies get completely shut out by the Academy, and that's sadly what happened to two generally awards-friendly films this year: The French Dispatch and Passing.

Wes Anderson has been an Oscar darling for years of course, making this his first film since 2007's The Darjeeling Limited to not receive even a single nomination.

Though The French Dispatch wasn't expected to score any top-line nods, Best Original Screenplay and some technical nominations, perhaps for Production Design or Costume Design, would've been well-deserved.

On the other hand there's Passing, which was pushing Ruth Negga for Best Supporting Actress, as well as possible nods for Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay, but came away with not a single one.

It simply isn't possible for every great film to be recognised, but considering some of the films that were, there should've been space to spotlight these two in at least one category.
