Oscars Nominations 2022: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

2. Baffling Omissions In Best Documentary & Best International Feature

A Hero

It's rare that a year goes by without either the Best Documentary or Best International Feature category egregiously snubbing one of the most acclaimed films of the year, and this time it happened in both fields.

Despite being by far one of the best-reviewed and most widely-seen documentaries of the year, Thai cave rescue doc The Rescue was snubbed by the Academy in favour of the lesser-known Writing with Fire - which, in fairness, is also a great movie in its own right.

Still, to see such a high-profile doc miss with voters is completely baffling.

On the International Feature side, Asghar Farhadi's new drama A Hero was widely tipped to be nominated, yet was shockingly pipped to the post by Bhutan's decidedly more niche Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.

For a film that won the Grand Prix at Cannes and was released on Amazon Prime a few weeks ago, that's a total head-scratcher.
