Oscars: Ranking Every Best Animated Feature Film

17. Frozen

When it was released, Frozen was everywhere; a major pop culture hit that comes along once in a lifetime, captures an entire generation in a vice grip, and then annoys scores of parents in the process simply because it won't go away.

Winning in a slow year for the animated movie world, Frozen is a well-structured and decent story of identity, acceptance, and unconditional family love, complete with catchy (if overplayed) tunes and strong voice work from the likes of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad.

Ultimately a popularity contest win, Frozen victory was both obvious and safe given its financial successes and influence, though compared to other Best Animated Feature winners it feels oddly unchallenging and formulaic. It's funny and touching in all the right places, but a few years after its release it feels slightly underwhelming.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
