Overlord Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

Downs...

4. Not. Enough. Zombies.

Overlord Zombies
Paramount Pictures

The marketing firmly painted Overlord as Nazi Zombies: The Movie, but sadly that's pretty damn far from the truth, and the film's trailers have actually been disappointingly deceptive.

The mutated humans and general body horror vibe emphasised in the marketing isn't introduced until about an hour into the movie, with most of the first two acts more closely resembling a conventional war thriller.

It's pretty frustrating, honestly, considering the obvious gonzo appeal of spending almost two hours watching soldiers battle Nazi mutant zombie-things, but ultimately that's a pretty small component of the film.

Was it an attempt to save the production some money or simply a case of the marketing team cynically trying to misrepresent the film to audiences craving some nutty Nazi zombie action?

Either way, it leaves a sour taste and ensures the final movie isn't really what paying customers were promised from the outset.
