Overlord Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Characters Are Pretty One-Note

Overlord Movie
Paramount Pictures

Even though the film's limited focus on the undead makes it slightly less-trashy than expected, that sentiment unfortunately doesn't result in the movie serving up a roster of richly-drawn characters.

While the cast does fine enough work, most of the soldiers are thin sketches at best, and considering how neat it would've been for the film to have a true, character-driven "men on a mission" vibe, it's a shame the heroes are generally flat and forgettable caricatures.

You'll be lucky to remember more than one of the soldiers' names, while distinct personality traits and memorable background information is in desperately short supply.

Nobody's saying the movie needed to be bloated out with exposition and forced, excessive character development, but because most of the heroes are total non-entities, it's hard to care all that much when they inevitably start getting killed.
