Owen Wilson: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. Alex Scott - I Spy (2002)

A critically panned box-office bomb, Owen Wilson should never have gone anywhere near I Spy. Another dismal footnote in an Eddie Murphy filmography littered with disasters, the movie brings Wilson down to its own juvenile and lame-brained level, casting him as Special Agent Alex Scott in a remake of 1960's TV show. The pair of Wilson and Murphy sounds appealing, but in I Spy they're made to look foolishly lost in a script that forces them to run around in circles with nowhere to go. Wilson may be many things but he's certainly no special agent, even one that's supposed to be a tad cartoonish. I Spy is a pretty disastrous affair on all fronts. Wilson's performance consists of acting exasperated throughout most of the movie, whilst Murphy gets in the way and causes mayhem all around him. By the time the movie's up, you're left feeling as deflated as Alex Scott is when he's assigned the stupid task in the first place. It doesn't matter who you are: you can't play off-type and remain buoyed by comic relief when the jokes all fall flat. Can you think of any other Owen Wilson performances you loved or hated?
