P.T. Anderson: Every Feature Film RANKED

6. Punch-Drunk Love

Boogie Nights
Columbia Pictures

With this romantic comedy-drama, Anderson provided a story with which star Adam Sandler could surprise critics by proving he was not only a competent dramatic actor, but actually a very good one when he wanted to be.

The plot follows socially anxious businessman Barry Egan, who is head over heels in love with his sister's coworker. Going into production on the film, Anderson had two goals in mind: work with Adam Sandler and make a film that's about ninety minutes long - on both fronts he was successful.

A number of stars - including Taika Waititi and Timothée Chalamet - consider the film a favourite. Punch-Drunk Love is a charming, offbeat romantic comedy, though one with darker elements lingering here and there. With focused writing, the surprisingly excellent central performance by Sandler and ever-wonderful co-lead Emily Watson, as well as the top notch supporting performances by Luis Guzmán and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Punch-Drunk Love is especially good serving as an introduction to the filmmaker's work, for those not yet familiar with Anderson's filmography.

Indeed, the main reason Punch-Drunk Love ranks as No.6 is that it is a less typical Anderson film, with the director's style tending towards the epic.
