The long in gestation sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim is finally starting to come together, and now it has an official release date.

23 February, 2018 is the date to mark in your diaries for the next clash between Jaegers and Kaiju, almost five years after the original was released.

The film has existed in various stated of development for a while now, with Guillermo del Toro expected to return to direct at one stage, and a 2017 release date pencilled in. Then Daredevil's Stephen S. DeKnight came on-board to direct, with del Toro producing, and a script from Jurassic World's Derek Connolly.

Most recently it was announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens' John Boyega would star in the film, as the son of Idris Elba's character from the first movie, with Charlie Hunnam rumoured to return.

Alongside Boyega, Deadline are reporting that Scott Eastwood is being eyed for a key role in the movie. Eastwood is a rising star at the moment, with roles in Fast 8 and Suicide Squad upcoming, and this would be another franchise to add to his belt.
