Pacific Rim: Uprising Review - 3 Ups & 7 Downs

4. The Atrocious Comic Relief

To give you an idea of what level of comedy we're working with here, the film opens with protagonist Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) explaining that he lives in the abandoned remains of a luxurious mansion because he doesn't want to reside in one of the "crappy apartments."

At this point, we cut to a broken down apartment with the sign "Crappi Apartments" plastered on it. At least the movie gets its very worst joke out of the way in the first three minutes, but there's a whole lot of embarrassing humour throughout the film.

Sure, the first Pacific Rim was plenty goofy in its own right, but it managed to tow the line and not take things too far, whereas here, it feels a lot more bone-headed in a way that'll make you wince rather than smile at the earnestness of it all.
