Paranormal Activity - The Ghost Dimension: 12 Ways It Ruins The Franchise

4. Toby Was Scarier When We Couldn't See Him...

Another major issue with the film is that the scares just aren't there. In the first few films in particular, tremendous amounts of suspense, tension and terror were mined out of the fact that this malevolent entity was mostly invisible and so our mind had to fill in the blanks with what the creature might look like. This time the film shows off Toby's demonic form in a fair-ish level of detail, which is sadly just a boring, black mess with occasionally skeletal features. If you were hoping for something more interesting (such as the seven-eyed demonic goat creature which is referenced several times throughout the film), you're going to be disappointed. Plus, Toby's depiction here isn't even consistent with the bird-like talons we saw in the first film after Micah put some powder down, so what's up with that? That he looks like a generic CGI ghost thing sucks almost all of the terror out of seeing him attack people, and the silly 3D doesn't exactly help.
