9. The Mysteries
The creepy, unknowable, and downright scary things going in the house add to an already intense story and atmosphere, and even when the film is at its funniest, the strange mysteries surrounding the film from the trailer alone already promise audiences that this film is way more than meets the eye.
Despite the story itself starting fairly innocuous, the suspense drawn from whether or not the Kim family can pull off its "heist", there is an expectation of things falling apart that does not let up, with strange occurrences cluing audiences in to unanswered questions.
The first moment comes from when the mother speaks of her son's early trauma, and only persists from there. Though many of the strange events in the film can be chalked up to the eccentricities of the rich, the increasing danger of being found out as the family "infiltrates" the house further elevates an already tense situation.
It all comes to a head after the comedic, "Mission Impossible" style infiltration is completed and the family enjoys the spoils of their successful con, when the movie shifts to something exceptionally darker than before, turning the comedy black right before the audience's very eyes.
