Parasite: 10 Reasons To Watch This Genre-Bending Dark Comedy Thriller
8. The Characters
The characters in this film are compelling across the board, interesting and complex and hilarious and fun to watch. In the case of the impoverished Kim family, even when you never quite think what they're doing is the right thing, nor does the movie tell you that they're squeaky clean Robin Hood style protagonists, they're so immensely likeable that you root for them anyway.
The rich Park family is never portrayed as anything other than kind and fair, even paying more than they're strictly supposed to for what they deem good service. However, their flaws can be found in ingrained classism, which comes up in ways that are subtle yet painful. For all that the husband and wife are pleasant and nice people, the contrast between them and the Kims is enormous, and they themselves are almost offensively ignorant of that fact.
Everyone in this film is memorable and clear-cut in their motivation without losing their complexity, and they fit beautifully into the increasingly intense narrative, moving naturally from comedic, lighthearted, heist film suspense to the film's later darker tone naturally.
