Parasite: 10 Reasons To Watch This Genre-Bending Dark Comedy Thriller

4. The Cinematography

Parasite Movie
Neon

This film is a feast for the eyes, with its excellent and beautiful shot composition and choreography. Bong Joon-Ho's decisive direction mixed with the bold colours and shapes and framing of each shot makes every part of the movie feel like a work of art. Whether the scene is comedic or dark, everything about what's going on onscreen is exciting and intriguing.

Visual metaphors speak to audiences throughout the film, from the blinking lights on the steps up the mansion to the ever-unsettling black rectangle of the stairway leading down to the basement.

The editing is also exceptional, especially in the final infiltration of the mansion, with the impeccable mix of music and fast-paced visuals stringing the audience's emotions and expectations along exactly the way the movie wants. Moments in this film stick with you long after viewing, and Bong Joon-Ho has the skill to make even a hilarious scene featuring a literal pissing drunk look artistic and beautiful.

With scenes in the mansion looking clean, beautiful, but cold, and scenes in the sub-basement looking and feeling grotty and uncomfortable as much in colour and lighting as in production design, the film's visuals never stop serving its story nor its audience.
