Parasite: 10 Reasons To Watch This Genre-Bending Dark Comedy Thriller

3. The Tense Atmosphere

Parasite Movie
Neon

The trailer does a lot to set up the tension of the film, but even without seeing the trailer, there's always something roiling just below the surface as you see the film transform from one thing to another. Even as you watch the con unfold with a sense of glee for the family's successes against all odds, something about the film just tells you that the eventual fulfilment of their carefully laid plans isn't going to be the end of it.

The tension of the con is enjoyable, almost light-hearted in its way, but it's after the con is accomplished that the tension mutates into something disturbing and downright horrifying.

There's an inherent tension in the class relations aspect of the film as well, something that can't be sloughed off in any honest portrayal of the relationship between the rich and impoverished. It plays a huge part in the more subtle, underlying aspects of the story, and both that and the more obvious tension of lies and secrets and the consequences of their actions come together in the explosive climax of the film.
