Parasite: 10 Reasons To Watch This Genre-Bending Dark Comedy Thriller

2. Bringing Asian Cinema To More Mainstream Western Audiences

Asian cinema making it big in Western and worldwide cinema isn't a new thing, but there's something unique about seeing it in 2019, where the rise of multiple streaming platforms means that more independent offerings can find their audience.

Parasite is increasingly raking in big bucks in the box office, showing off a hunger for excellent films from other countries that aren't necessarily in English, similar to how Japanese horror got large scale imports in the mid-2000s, but with (hopefully) less of the largely inferior American remakes.

With a fully Korean cast, Parasite is proving more lucrative than Bong Joon-Ho's other film, Snowpiercer, even with its all-star cast including Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, and the fact that it was in English. Parasite is getting people to go out to theatres to watch a subtitled film, something that might have been considered a risk to many distributors only a few short years ago.

Part of this can also be attributed to word of mouth and the weight of internet reviews getting people to theatres, and if this trend continues, we might see more films like this raking in profits despite not being what Hollywood would label a "sure thing".
