Paul Feig Defends Ghostbusters As Superior International Trailer Lands
"Either give us a chance, or you don't have to see it..."
Life must be pretty hard for Paul Feig at the minute. Given the chance to make a progressive remake of a beloved comedy franchise that had one great film and one good one and then ran dry, he's now being lambasted from three different sides.
First, he has to deal with the disgruntled original Ghostbusters fans who would only want to see another Ghostbusters film with the original cast, then he's got those who are upset at it being an all-female remake, and now he's got all those people who think his first trailers sucked.
In an interview with Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazine, the director has defended the film against the negative reaction:
We have over 60 million hits. So lets put it in context a little bit. All I can ask is, people, either give us a chance, or you dont have to see it. Im really proud of it."
Unfortunately for him, the people currently saying they're not going to see it seem to be an awful lot louder than the others.
I think its fun. Im so proud of my cast. I think the cast is so good, and they can stand in the footsteps of who came before, because theyre such funny people but theyre different. Thats all you really want out of a comedy at the end of the day, is something different and new, and to just see great people do it.
Feig also confirmed why he thinks some of the backlash has happened:
I think a lot of people thought we were going to take the original script and just flip it, so that Melissas going to be Venkman, and Kates going to be Ray Stantz! And youre like, well, no, we would never do that. Nobody knows what youre doing, so it could be anything. For us, we just needed to plant a flag and go, heres kind of how some of the stuff in the movie is!
He's right, that would have been a hell of a lot worse. But he has to concede at some point that those trailers are not great. Even if he has nothing to do with them, they reflect his product poorly and someone really ought to be hauled over coals for them.
But FINALLY someone has made a better fist of a trailer, as the International Teaser has just landed...
Holy Sh*t some actual real life jokes. Now that's an awful lot better.
Ghostbusters will be in cinemas on July 15th. See it or don't see it, nobody's forcing you.
