Peacemaker: 10 Things You Need To Know About The Suicide Squad TV Series
John Cena will star in The Suicide Squad spinoff, but what should you expect from the TV series?
Due to current world events, filmmaker James Gunn has had a little extra time on his hands, and it's that which led to him dreaming up a TV series spinning out of the events of The Suicide Squad. Officially announced yesterday, the show will put the spotlight on WWE Superstar John Cena's Peacemaker, a character described as a "douchey Captain America" during DC FanDome last month.
While Cena has certainly been making waves as an actor (he'll be a huge part of F9: The Fast Saga next year), giving him the lead role in a superhero TV series is a bold and exciting move, even if Task Force X members like Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and Captain Boomerang seem better suited to the small screen.
So, who is Peacemaker, why should you care, and what's the plan for this latest, big budget DC TV series? Well, here you will find an in-depth look at his comic book history, what that likely means for both The Suicide Squad and this spinoff, and everything that's so far been revealed about what Gunn and Cena have planned for Peacemaker on television.
This may be an unexpected choice of character for their own series, but the potential is definitely here for something special as you will soon see...
10. James Gunn Is Writing And Directing (Some Of) The TV Show
When Disney decided to fire James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to some old, offensive Tweets (they were bad jokes at the time, but considered unacceptable by today's standards), Warner Bros. wasted no time in hiring him to write and direct The Suicide Squad.
Post-production work is now taking place, and Gunn was re-hired by Disney and Marvel Studios when it became clear that they had acted rashly.
However, with time on his hands before work on Vol. 3 begins, Gunn will write every single episode of Peacemaker, while also directing "several" of them according to the press release. Among them will be premiere, so it will clearly be down to the filmmaker to set the tone for what follows. That's a big commitment, but one he's anticipating squeezing in when filming starts early next year.
There's really no one better than Gunn to expand the world he's creating with The Suicide Squad, and as he explained on Twitter, "I'm always driven by what excites me most creatively in the moment."
