Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP: His 10 Best Roles

2. Lancaster Dodd - The Master (2012)

One of Hoffman's finest hours was saved for what was unfortunately one of his last appearances, in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. Hoffman plays Lancaster Dodd, the leader of a religious movement known as The Cause, who take in World War Two veteran Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) as they spread their word across the country. The performance given by Hoffman here could rightly be considered by some as being his finest, as it is most certainly one which is very much in his own mold. He has a quiet but authoritative presence in the film, and has the audience hanging on every last word, even if it would appear that what he's saying isn't integral for the plot, simply because we want to see what he's going to do. Once more, Hoffman provides an understated and thoughtful appearance, helping the film tick over and providing the perfect partnership with Phoenix. And, what's more, the performance also granted Hoffman further nominations from the Academy, and a truly phenomenal amount of critical acclaim.
