Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP: His 10 Best Roles

1. Truman Capote - Capote (2005)

Capote is a biographical film focusing on the life of an American author around the writing of the novel In Cold Blood. It also happens to be a film which captures one of the finest performances an audience is likely to see, thanks to Hoffman. His turn as the titular Truman Capote has been revered as being uncannily similar to the man, whilst also being simply breathtaking as a whole. He as usual brings a sense of class and understated coolness to the role, and for all his flaws, is a character you cannot help but like. But what stands out so much in this performance is that not only did he win plaudits, it was the overwhelming level of casualness with which the world reacted to it. It was almost as if we all knew that Hoffman, the perennial supporting actor would one day step into a lead role and make it his own. His performance won him five of the major awards, including the much lauded Academy Award for Best Actor, which speaks volumes, given he was going up against Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix for Brokeback Mountain and Walk The Line, respectively. Philip Seymour Hoffman was undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of his generation, and he gave the world some truly mesmerising performances for us to remember him by; it is simply unfortunate that we have to remember him so early, and that he did not get the chance to continue showcasing his ability for years to come. There were so many roles which Hoffman made his own, let us know your favourites and thoughts in the comments section below.
