Ultimately, fans want to know where the new Pirates stands among the previous movies, and while it doesn't get anywhere near the greatness of the original or the decent thrills of Dead Man's Chest, it is an improvement over the last two films, largely because of the fun new cast members, thrilling action and disciplined pacing.

Huge fans of the series will have fun with it regardless, but even those expecting a thoroughly bland summer blockbuster may be pleasantly surprised that, honestly, it's not that bad at all, especially if you can forgive its third-act mistakes.

In short, it's neither the disaster many expected nor the substantial return to form many hoped for: it's mildly encouraging, which is basically enough at this point.
