With so much to take in and digest from DC FanDome so far, one brilliant piece of news that may have slipped under the radar of some is that tentative plans are being made to develop a live-action Static Shock movie.

This reveal was made during this weekend’s DC Comics panel, where the revival of Milestone Comics and a new Static Shock comic book series were discussed. Milestone Comics is a banner developed by Milestone Media, with publishing and distribution handled by DC Comics.

Hosted by Mark Bernardin, this panel featured DC Comics CCO Jim Lee, Static Shock voice star Phil LaMarr, Milestone co-founder and partner Denys Cowan, and fellow Milestone partner Reginald Hudlin - and it was Hudlin who broke the news on a Static Shock movie.

Hudlin is one of the people tasked with expanding the reach and exposure of the Milestone Media brand, and during panel he revealed, “We are in serious conversations, as we’re launching a new comic book series, in developing a Static Shock movie. That’ll be a theatrical film. What we’re talking about is unbelievable!”

In addition to this, the panel also discussed how plans are afoot to showcase more Milestone characters across animated features, podcasts, and comics – with Static Shock getting a new comic title in February 2021.

Originally known simply as Static, teenager Virgil Hawkins first appeared in June 1993, created by Milestone Comics founders Denys Cowan, Dwayne McDuffie, Michael Davis and Derek T. Tingle.

After being exposed to a chemical substance, Virgil developed metahuman abilities that allowed him to manipulate and channel electromagnetic forces. Most famously, the character headlined his own Static Shock animated show for four seasons between 2002 and 2004.
