Polar Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs
2. The Entertaining Supporting Cast
Mikkelsen isn't the only talented actor in the fray, though.
Especially note-worthy is Vanessa Hudgens, who appears as Vizla's traumatised neighbour Camille and gives the closest thing the movie has to an actual dramatic performance. Her heartfelt monologues are ultimately wasted on a movie like this, but she certainly gets an A for effort.
Elsewhere Katheryn Winnick is an appealing femme fatale even if her part's fatally underwritten, while Richard Dreyfuss has a divertingly absurd minor role as a strung-out, karaoke-singing former hitman.
Matt Lucas' wildly OTT turn as the villainous Blut is likely to prove far more divisive, but he's at least trying to mine the story's manic potential, and the same can be said for Johnny Knoxville, who makes a brief cameo at the start of the film.
All of these talented performers clearly deserved better, but at least they're actually trying rather than just mailing in their performances.
