Predator Skulls: 10 Mistakes It Needs To Avoid

1. Don't Show A Xenomorph

The Predator
20th Century Fox

One of the highlights of Predator 2 comes near the end of the film after Danny Glover's Michael Harrigan has managed to sneak aboard the alien's spaceship. As he searches the vessel, Harrigan sees a trophy wall full of skulls, one of which belongs to an Xenomorph, the slimy wall-crawling creature from the Aliens franchise.

This glorious Easter egg nodded to the crossover comic book series from Dark Horse that pitted Aliens against Predators. The concept of having these two deadly species crossover led to two feature films, 2004's Alien vs Predator and 2007's Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. While the first AvP film was a solid entry for both franchises, Requiem was a colossal misfire. The feature received a sound critical drubbing before a middling box office performance put the crossover series on ice.

With expanded universes being all the rage at the cinemas, the temptation to further develop the Alien/Predator connection may be extremely appealing for Trachtenberg, but the concept has now been thoroughly run into the ground.

Predator Skulls should strive to stand on its own and focus solely on delivering a satisfying entry in the series. If it does this, then audience might be eager once again to see these two monster movie icons pair up, but the franchise might trip itself up if it focuses too much on building an expanded universe at the expense of story.
