Predicting 2014's 10 Biggest Box Office Movies

4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Estimated Gross: $800m)

The rebooted Amazing Spider-Man became the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise when it was released in 2012, even with the addition of 3D. That being said, a $752.2m worldwide total is nothing to be sniffed at, and with an aggressive marketing campaign already in full swing and the enduring popularity of the Spider-Man character I believe the sequel will earn even more. But not by much. The main problem for The Amazing Spider-Man was that it came too soon after Sam Raimi's trilogy, which was ingrained in the public consciousness as the cinematic iteration of the character. Re-treading an origin story that everybody already knows only a decade later wasn't a great idea, nor was the confusing marketing that promised 'the untold story' yet provided something completely different. However, reviews were mostly positive bar criticisms of the unnecessary origin story and occasionally-ropey CGI. The trailers for the sequel have mainly focused on Jamie Foxx as Electro, as well as hinting at more major villains to come with glimpses of several huge action set-pieces. Any Spider-Man movie is going to be a success, but with the origin story out of the way The Amazing Spider-Man 2 can really let rip. Sam Raimi's three Spider-Man movies grossed between $783.8m and $890.9m, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should end up somewhere in the middle. The May 2 release date keeps it a month away from Captain America, and it essentially has the place to itself for two weeks before Godzilla arrives on the 16th. The sequel will definitely open higher than The Amazing Spider-Man's $62m domestic debut, and increased international revenues will see it out-perform its predecessor.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
