The Lion King is the Disney Animated Classic. And by the looks of things, it's also going to be the live-action reimagining, too.

When The Lion King was released in 1994, it became the highest-grossing animation of all time, and it's still the highest-grossing traditional animation ever made, with a total haul of $968m. That was in the 90s, and it was animated, so just imagine what this version of The Lion King, regardless of how 'live-action' it actually is, could do.

The director made Iron Man and The Jungle Book. The cast is led by Donald Glover and Beyoncé. It has access to an unparalleled set of songs, incredible technology, and a wave of nostalgia combined with being a film that'll play well to new audiences too. The trailer has broken Disney's record for most views in 24-hours, and across all their brands sits just behind Avengers: Infinity War in that regard - a film that made $2bn.

No other family movie is going to be able to stand in its way. Few movies will period. It doesn't have competition, it has a ready-made audience, and it's probably going to dominate in China too. This is going to be huge, it's just a question of whether it can get past the $2bn mark or not.
