Predicting DC's 9 Upcoming Superhero Movies Up To 2020
9. Shazam Or Sandman - August 5, 2016
These two films are wildcards, as they haven't been officially released yet, but are apparently in active development at the studio. A Shazam adaptation has been in the works since around 2009, though it's remained in Development Hell ever since then. The ever-shifting plans for the DCCU certainly haven't helped the film along, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been a steady proponent for the film since the beginning, and has recently been heavily teasing that he'll land either the film's title role, or the superhero's arch-nemesis, Black Adam. Johnson recently claimed that the script is complete and that an official announcement for the film will arrive any day now. With so much of the pre-production work already handled, it's safe to assume that Shazam will arrive in theaters before the rest of the Justice League. Whether or not the character will show up in the team-up is another story, but Shazam's inception into the Justice League in the New 52 is a clear indication that Warner Bros. and DC have big plans for the former Captain Marvel. The other wildcard here is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's seminal and beloved comic books series, Sandman. A Sandman adaptation has been in the works for years, but recently got new legs when Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer announced that he'd be teaming with The Dark Knight Rises' Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gaiman himself to write and produce a new take. There's little chance that Sandman will connect with the rest of the Justice League universe, but since it's technically a DC film, it finds a place on this list.
