With Mephisto released, and fans not exactly falling over to love the second Thor movie, there's an opportunity to go dark, with an intriguing story of familial betrayal again (in the manner of Game Of Thrones). Have Mephisto go after Odin's soul, as he did in the comic books, as a misdirecting tactic to take Loki's soul. That would allow for a play on the supernatural details, and an explicit link to the Doctor Strange narrative, including having the sorceror work together with Thor to fight the possessed Odin/Loki and Mephisto, and discover the demon's intentions, which could be revealed at the end as Thanos' punishment for Loki's failure in the first Avengers movie, and a play for Loki's sceptre, which he has subsequently discovered contains the Mind Infinity Gem. Three magical characters in one place isn't going to fix any concerns with supernatural elements of the Marvel world, but Feige has been keen to explore magic in a more grounded way.
