Predicting The 10 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2019

9. Dora The Explorer

Budget: $50 million (estimated)

Box Office Prediction: $120 million (franchise prospects dead)

Though the idea of a Dora the Explorer movie isn't inherently awful, wouldn't it have made more sense to go the animated route and, uh, not wait until five years after it stopped airing?

Despite the character's popularity, you have to wonder who this live-action adaptation is for.

The primary viewership has aged-up and moved on, while the youngest kids have no frame of reference for Dora and adults have roundly mocked the first official image for looking more like a Dora-themed porno than a genuine endorsed movie.

The slight hope comes from The Muppets' James Bobin taking the helm, suggesting it might end up more self-aware than it looks. But honestly, the meta approach is no guarantee for success, and it could turn off even those mildly nostalgic parents dragging their kids to see it.

Plus, its August 2 release date isn't great, coming just two weeks after The Lion King, a week before Artemis Fowl and two weeks before The Angry Birds Movie 2.

While its budget is likely only in the $50 million ballpark, Dora could end up performing similarly to Sonic, where it scrapes past the point of profitability while not performing well enough to kick-start the franchise Paramount desires.
