Predicting The 10 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2019
7. The New Mutants
Budget: $70 million (estimated)
Box Office Prediction: $130 million (projected $10 million loss)
Though Dark Phoenix will likely be saved from box office oblivion by China if its YouTube views in the region are any indication, the same can't be said of The New Mutants.
Despite a talented cast and director at the helm, the superhero horror film has suffered through a tumultuous production, beset by disagreements between filmmaker Josh Boone and Fox, resulting in a 16-month delay as Boone prepares for extensive re-shoots.
Though the budget is clearly far more modest than a typical X-Men movie and the general public doesn't really know much about the laboured production, there are a number of additional questionable factors.
For starters, the budget has clearly been bloated out by the re-shoots and delays - likely taking it from around $50 million to potentially $70 million - to say nothing of the tonally uneven trailers, the prospect of X-Men fatigue and it releasing just two months after the probable trainwreck that is Dark Phoenix.
Plus, it hits cinemas on August 2, where it threatens to have its lunch eaten by both The Lion King and Hobbs & Shaw. Assuming it actually gets a theatrical release and isn't just dumped on Disney+ later in the year, this is likely D.O.A.
